2011 sailing course prospectus
 
Exciting new developments for the 2011 season mean that Porthpean O.E.C. are able to offer the following range of water based practical courses. We are an R.Y.A. recognised training centre and all our courses carry R.Y.A. certification.
Our dinghy fleet is modern and comprises both single and double handed craft. Our instructors are highly qualified and enthusiastic and while all of our courses have a serious side at Porthpean we always try to emphasize the Fun in everything we do.
 
 
SAILING COURSES
 
RYA Start Sailing (Level One)
Start sailing says it all. this course covers all you need to know to get afloat under supervision, in light winds. The course is focused on practical skills on the water but will include some theory.. During this course you will learn about:
·         Basic rigging of the boat – spars, sail controls and foils.
·         Sailing techniques – e.g.: sailing upwind/downwind.
·         Parts of a boat, sailing and sail control.
·         Reaching, Tacking, Gybing.
·         Basic rope work – knots.
·         How to launch and recover your boat.
As well as being aware of other water users, an important part of sailing is a basic knowledge of the rules of the road. This will be incorporated into the theoretical part of this course.
Pre course ability required: none

RYA Basic Skills (Level Two)
If you already have your level one or if you are a reasonably competent sailor who wishes to improve this course which is run over two days will give you an understanding of the necessary skills, and will prepare you to sail a dinghy on your own and as crew on a double handed dinghy.
During this course you will increase your knowledge of:
·         Rigging – according to weather.
·         Sailing manoeuvres – e.g.: sail setting, balance, trim etc.
·         Rope work – further knots.
·         Capsize and recovery.
·         Seamanship skills
·         Rules of the road
In addition you will learn about tides, wind direction and tidal flow. This course will also cover basic equipment, clothing and buoyancy for your personal safety..
Pre course ability: Knowledge to Level 1 standard.

Five Day Course (RYA Level One & Two)
Five days of fun and a fast track route into the world of sailing. This course is an intensive week of practical and theory sessions which will see a transformation for course participants from complete beginner to competent R.Y.A. certified dinghy sailor, using single and double handed dinghies the course will include
RYA Level one and two

·         Rig tuning.
·         Sailing techniques – e.g.: sailing upwind / downwind.
·         Parts of a boat, sailing and sail control.
·         Reaching, Tacking, Gybing.
·         Basic rope work – knots.
·         How to launch and recover your boat.
·         Rigging – according to weather
·         Sailing manoeuvres – e.g.: sail setting, balance, trim etc
·         Rope work – further knots.
·         Capsize and recovery

POWERBOAT COURSES

 
 
RYA Level One Powerboat
This course provides a simple one day introduction to boating techniques, beginning with pre-start checks, launching and recovering a boat from a road trailer, to everyday boat handling, and the provision and use of safety equipment. The minimum age is 8 years, and the course carries certification, however candidates under the age of 16 will be issued with an endorsed certificate.

·         Use of Kill cord
·         Steering controls, Securing to a Buoy
·         Leaving and Coming along side

Pre course ability required: must be over 8 years old

RYA Level Two Powerboat
This is the National Powerboat Certificate, the driving license of the powerboating world, and our most popular course. This exciting course provides you with the skills and background knowledge required to become a competent powerboat driver
This is also the gateway for all the varied disciplines in the Watersports industry, including Canoe/Kayak umpire, Ski Boat Driver, Life Savers and Dive boat drivers, or just to be able to take the family out for a safe day on the water. You will also learn about types of craft and engine, along with maintenance checks, weather forecasts and emergency action. This is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence.

RYA Safety Boat
Designed for those who use powerboats to provide support and safety cover for Watersports such as, sailing, windsurfing, kayaking or canoeing and kite surf support. Ideal for Sailing Club or Yacht Club volunteers, as well as anybody wishing to improve their driving skills.
This course focuses on rescue techniques, different methods of recovery, and towing of a large variety of craft, and of course, most importantly, the safe recovery of people.
